SIA ranks 17th on Fortune list of most admired firms
The carrier was ranked 17th in the 2007 list complied by the United States business publication.
SIA was the only airline and the sole South-east Asian firm to make the top 50. It also improved on its ranking of 19th last year and 28th in 2005.
More than 1,500 executives in 26 countries were polled by management consultancy Hay Group, which did the survey for Fortune.
The winner this year was American electronics giant General Electric - the seventh time in a decade it has finished in the top spot - with Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor the runner-up.
American-based companies took 35 of the places in the top 50.
Firms were rated on a number of variables, including quality of management, products and services, innovation, long-term investment value and effectiveness in conducting business globally.
SIA chief executive officer Chew Choon Seng told The Straits Times: 'We are honoured by the high rating ...The credit goes to the fine men and women who make up the company and who appreciate that we have to earn and retain the loyalty of our customers.'
Despite high fuel costs and keen competition, SIA has managed to stay profitable 'by focusing on cost efficiency and on fulfilling customers' evolving expectations through improvement and innovation in our products and services', he said.
The recognition by Fortune will spur the team to even greater heights, he added.
In the nine months to December, SIA recorded a net profit of $1.46 billion, up almost 50 per cent on a year earlier.
Turnover was $10.82 billion, up 8.8 per cent.
This year is expected to be an equally strong one for the carrier, which will be the first to fly the new Airbus A-380 superjumbo later this year.
The world's biggest commercial jet is expected to be delivered to SIA in October.
Fortune's 2007 list of the top 50 most admired companies is published in the magazine's March 19 issue.
